The UUCP Governing Board has decided to call a special congregational meeting to officially vote on the 8th Principle. The meeting will be held during our 2nd Hour time, beginning at 11:30 on Sunday, July 16th. We hope it will be brief, consisting only of a vote on the previously discussed 8th Principle. As you may remember, we disussed the 8th Principle at our Annual Congregational Meeting in May, but the motion to adopt was tabled to allow further discussion about the way it would be worded.
On the 16th, we will vote between the two versions written by a committee of volunteers on June 4th. The two versions, plus the alternative “not to adopt” were presented to the congregation for a gathering of consensus by email and in person at two church services, earlier this month (June). In that poll, the strong consensus (26 people) was to adopt version #2 (the short version), with 5 people who prefered the longer version, and 5 people who chose the “Not to adopt” option. The Board believes it’s important to bring this to an official vote.
If you are not able to attend in person, you may email your vote to Laura Keith King, by no later than Saturday, 12:00 Noon, July 15th, or join the meeting by zoom. The link will be sent out next week. According to our bylaws, only members of the church who have been members for at least 6 weeks can vote. We WILL need you to attend and vote, or vote by email or zoom, if you previously responded to the poll.
Attached you will find the document presented previously in case you would like to review information already presented about the 8th Principle.
There is error in the document attached. We have learned, thanks to research by Linda Cobb, that over 200 UU Congregations have actually already adopted the 8th Principle, and that number may be higher due to lack of reporting.
We hope to see you all there!
On Behalf of the Board of Governors,
Laura Keith King
