Community Organizations
UUCP members are involved in many community organizations. Here is a selected list of organizations.
JUST Pensacola
JUST Pensacola (Justice United Seeking Transformation in Pensacola) is a coalition of 17 congregations from 12 different faith traditions in Pensacola and other surrounding areas of Escambia County. JUST Pensacola is an interfaith organization that actively uncovers injustice and mobilizes the community through the power of organized people to create and win just, fair, and effective solutions.
UU Justice Florida
Unitarian Universalist Justice Florida is a statewide justice ministry for members of 46 Unitarian Universalist congregations in Florida and their social justice committees in partnership with other interfaith and public interest organizations to promote justice, equity and compassion in public policy.
League of Women Voters
a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
Open Books Bookstore
Open Books is a non-profit, volunteer-run bookstore. Proceeds from the sale of books and donations support the Prison Book Project, operating since 2000. The Prison Book Project currently sends around 6,000 books each year to indigent inmates in Florida prisons, the largest prison system in the country and one sorely lacking in-house book collections. The Prison Book Project currently serves approximately 1,800 inmates each year.
Movement for Change
At Movement for Change, our mission is to increase the community’s awareness of social justice issues, to advocate and conduct actions to improve human and civil rights, and through its programs enhance the educational and economic opportunities for the residents of Northwest Florida.
Escambia-Pensacola Human Relations Commission
The EPHRC was created to promote fair treatment and equal opportunity for all Escambia County citizens regardless of race or color, sex (gender), religion, age, national origin or disability.
ACLU of Florida
The ACLU is our nation’s guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.
Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation (TASF)
The mission of the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation (TASF) is to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen by providing motivation, access and scholarships to assist financially and academically deserving students in the pursuit of their college education.
Equal Justice Initiative
The EJI is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.
Fifth Sunday Organizations
In months when there are five Sundays, our congregation collects a Fifth Sunday Offering to benefit a local nonprofit organization. Often on that Sunday, a member of the selected organization also speaks to our congregants about their work. Recent past beneficiaries of our Fifth Sunday Offering have included the following.
