In 1983, the nationwide anti-abortion protest movement began in Pensacola, driven by extremists who believe that violence is justified to stop abortions. Far from being defined by the anti-abortion movement, the city all along has been a site of struggle by supporters of bodily autonomy, reproductive rights, and women’s rights. UUCP members have been actively and significantly engaged in the work to protect and maintain reproductive freedom. The struggle continues today against unrelenting efforts to restrict and criminalize access to abortions, contraceptives, and reproductive health care. This event will explore lessons from Pensacola’s past and local efforts to reclaim a better future. Join us for a panel discussion and a short film on Pensacola’s abortion rights history. The event is free and open to the public.
