Welcome to my first monthly column as President of the church Governing Board. Like my predecessor Nancy Hagman and others before me, I intend this to be a space for sharing the news of the Board and important issues of UUCP. I hope the column promotes good communication so we all feel informed and aware of what is happening and where we fit in.
I am enthused about working with the Board, Rev. Alice and the congregation this year to keep us moving forward. Our church fills a vital need for us and for the larger community. We each have a responsibility to sustain the church’s assets, which include our building and grounds, our treasury, our work within and outside our walls and our beloved members and friends.
As in many congregations, activity at UUCP slows quite a bit in the summer. The slower pace can allow us to rest, refresh, and enjoy the amenities of our beautiful Gulf Coast. In my house, July is a bustling time as three of our four family members celebrate birthdays this month. Between parties, rehearsals for Desmond’s next play and both kids completing summer reading lists required for middle school and high school (!!), we have lots of activity at home.
Members of the Board and Rev. Alice also are working now to prepare for success in the new church year. We are planning for the Board Retreat in August. The annual retreat serves three functions: orienting new Board members, team building for the Board and minister and setting goals for the year. On our agenda is a set of exercises to “find our why” — clarify why UUCP exists and why we are a part of the church. Based on the work of author and speaker Simon Sinek, the exercises to find our why will help us develop a clearer vision for the future of our church. Expect to hear more about this important exploration in the months to come, including discussions and Second Hour programs.
Other activities around UUCP to take note of include:
- Replacement of one of our HVAC units that stopped working. Replacement required that the Board request a loan from the Charitable Trust.
- Offering of OWL sexuality education classes for 4th-6th graders this Fall. Parent Interest Meeting is Sun., Aug. 25.
- Participation in the community listening portion of the Pensacola Area Interfaith Justice Ministry.
- Revision of the UUCP website. Charlie Steed keeps the site updated as one of our key communication venues for members and for those curious about UUCP.
As you can see, we have lots going on. I’m looking forward to getting through the challenges ahead together. I welcome your feedback.
Until next time,
Lauren Anzaldo, Board President
