We face a deficit of nearly 4,000 affordable rental units in this county. The housing wage for a two-bedroom apartment at market rate in Escambia is $22.46 and for a one-bedroom $19.35 — out of reach for many. Of the 10 most common jobs in our community, only one — registered nurse — pays enough for a two-bedroom apartment at market rate. Many workers — including firefighters, medical assistants, pharmacy techs, childcare workers, hotel workers secretaries, restaurant staff, and retail personnel — can’t even afford a one-bedroom apartment.
