Do We Need Religion?

A sermon by Rev. Harold W. Beu

“Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Livin’ life in peace.”

The lyrics above I have no doubt are familiar to most if not all of you. They are from the song “Imagine” by John Lennon. We can excuse the bad grammar, i.e., “there’s no countries.” But what I wonder about is a world with no religions. Is that possible? And if that happened, would we be better off than we are now? Obviously, we can imagine that religion can cause great destruction as we see today in the Middle East. But I am wondering if people as individuals would be better off without religion. Join me in my one small exploration into this imaginative journey.
