National Coming Out Day is celebrated each year on October 11. The first observation was in 1988, on the one-year anniversary of the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, in which 500,000 people participated. By 1990 it was being celebrated in all 50 states. The Human Rights Campaign reminds us “Coming out in order to live openly isn’t something you do once, or even for one year. It’s a decision that we make every single day of our lives.” On this Sunday we honor the ongoing process and arduous journey of living openly and authentically.
