Walt Whitman, Gay Icon and American Visionary

Before the words “gay” and “homosexual” were common names for same-sex attraction, the 19th century poet Walt Whitman was celebrating male “friendship” and “adhesion” in Leaves of Grass.  A new collection of his love poems, Live Oak with Moss, marks the poet’s 200th birthday and helps us appreciate his radically inclusive vision of America.
