Widening the Circle

Our theme for February is “Widening the Circle.” Many of you are probably familiar with the picture of our chalice inside of two concentric circles. It is often portrayed with the poem “Outwitted” by Edwin Markham, born in 1852.

He drew a circle that shut me out—
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!”

The poem expresses Markham’s Universalist belief that love is big enough to include everyone. On this Sunday we will welcome new members while considering the human motivation to belong and the meaning of membership in a Unitarian Universalist Church.
